San Jose is Costa Rica’s capital, located in the centre of the country. Once a small village before the state liberal Juan Mora Fernández moved the base from Cartago and with its rapid growth, it became the first city in Latin America illuminated by electric energy. It is ringed by lush green mountains and valleys populated probably half of the whole country, containing the primary airport, the University of Costa Rica, the US’ and other embassies and cultural venues, hotels, markets and many museums etc. One of the finest museums is the Gold Museum offering a rare look at various gold items of the ancient Latin American civilizations. For the less adventurous, the Lankester Botanical Gardens is just outside of San José.
