| |  | | Nafplion or Nafplio (also sometimes known as Nauplia) is one of the most elegant towns of Greece, situated on the Argolic Gulf in the northeast Peloponnese. Most of the old town is on a peninsula jutting into the gulf. This peninsula forms a naturally protected bay that is enhanced by the addition of man-made moles. After becoming the royal residence initiated in 1800s, since in 1980s, the town has increasingly served as a popular year-round weekend retreat, with the result that hotel rooms and meals have crept up to Athens rates and above, but it remains by far the most attractive base for exploring the Argolid and resting for a while by the sea. |
