Explore the amazing diversity of South Africa’s proud wildlife heritage. Truly the flagship of the country’s national parks — and certainly the biggest — the world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks among the best in Africa. Established in 1898 to protect South Africa’s wildlife, this national park of nearly two million hectares (18,000 square kilometres), roughly the size of Wales, is unrivalled in the diversity of its life forms, and a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and nature conservation policies. It is home to an impressive number of flora and fauna: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Part of the Kruger Canyons Biosphere, an area designated as a world heritage site by UNESCO, the park is undoubtedly the best place to experience a real African adventure. It is divided into six different ecosystems, while traces of ancient human life dating back 1.5 million years have also been found here. The park is located in the northeastern part of the country, under an hour by plane from Johannesburg.
