Opening in August of 2006, Gramercy Park Hotel will set the standard for casual luxury, an alternative to what is currently available, for hotels. The hotel has a downtown approach with a classic vocabulary, said Ian Schrager, the owner and developer. Situated on New York's only private park, the location is a quiet enclave amidst the frantic pace that is Manhattan. The hotel design will be low-key, yet startling- the inspiration stemming from the rich saturated colors of the Renaissance. The focal point of the intimate lobby with its twenty-foot ceiling will be a massive stone fireplace. Guest rooms feature furniture upholstered in tapestry and velvet fabrics, desks are leather topped. Dark hardwood floors in the guest rooms and bathrooms evoke a warm residential feel. Yet accessories, artwork and original lighting fixtures provide a touch of whimsy, the surprise of found objects collected on a journey. High-definition plasma televisions are found in all guest rooms for watching movies, news or sporting events with incredible picture clarity. IPod docking stations are wired so that guests can listen to their favorite music. Of the 185 guest rooms, 45 are suites. Each of the eight specialty suites has its own unique decor adding to the residential one-of-a-kind feel. Gramercy Park provides views of the changing seasons to many of the rooms and suites. Dedicated park-view meeting rooms and a business center provide space to focus on business needs. The Roof Terrace will host some of New York's premiere social and business events. Wireless Internet service will be available throughout the hotel. A health club with treatment rooms allows guests the convenience of an onsite work out, massage or other spa services. The restaurant is being conceived by Alan Yau, the creator of the UK?s only one-star Michelin Chinese restaurant, Hakkasan. The bars promise to become New York destinations in and of themselves.
