Arc de Triomphe, standing in the middle of the Place Charles de Gaulle, formerly the Place de l'Étoile, at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, is a key player in this historic area of the city. Leading from the courtyard Louvre Palace, a sequence of monuments and grand thoroughfares leading out of Paris, it’s a ‘must see’ destination on any visitor’s agenda. Commissioned in 1806 after the victory at Austerlitz by Emperor Napoleon I, it stands as a proud tribute to the country. Nearby, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is also worth a visit. As is a climb to the top of the structure where one gets spectacular views of Paris. All up, it, like the Eifel Tower, is one of the top 10 spots in the country’s capital, not to be missed.
